Bargello 101
Bargello quilt patterns are incredibly varied, but this one is a great beginning pattern to learn the standard method used to make the unique fabric movement of a bargello quilt. It involves a lot of straight sewing and accurate cutting to produce the beautiful bargello pattern.
Skill Level:
intermediate
Skill Details:
Accurate sewing and cutting various widths of strip-pieced fabrics
Requirements:
Quilt Top (50" x 61"):
• 1 roll of 2-1/2” strips (NOTE: The jelly roll you choose must have at least 3 strips EACH of
12 shades of solid colors OR prints. You need to create three (3) identical strip sets with
each of the 12 fabric shades/prints.)
• OR: 1/3 yard each of 12 light to dark solid colors or prints; cut three (3) 2-1/2” strips
from each of the 12 colors
• 3/4 yard contrasting fabric
• 3/4 yard border fabric
• 3/4 yard binding fabric (or use left over 2-1/2” strips to make a multi-color binding)
Pattern: Bargello Pattern PAT1692 from Missouri Star Quilt Company (we will order PDF digital
downloads for each registered student; cost is $5)
NOTE: *Pre-Sewing Requirements*
You will need to make three identical strip sets prior to class. Arrange the color order of (12) 2-
1/2” strips from dark to light. Number the strips from 1 – 12 to keep track of the color order.
Sew the strips together along the length of the strip (WOF). Make three (3) strip sets following
the same color order (1 – 12). When you add a strip, sew it to previous strip starting at the
OPPOSITE end as previously sewn strip. The strip set will lay flatter for sub-cutting if you
alternate the sewing direction each time you add a strip. (Ask me how I know!!) Be very careful
to maintain a 1/4” seam allowance. Don’t cut off selvages yet. You’ll be cutting these off when
you create tubes with your strip sets and begin sub-cutting them (we will do these steps IN
CLASS).
Bring your contrasting fabric with you. Cutting instructions will be provided with your pattern.
